At least 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
