Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the ability to question particular rulings made by the official, echoing the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
